Our work
Solar Decathlon
Eklektus Inc. has been helping out with Victoria Unviversity of Wellington's entry to the 2011 Solar Decathlon.
Every two years, the U.S. Department of Energy holds a competition on the National Mall in Washington DC, displaying energy innovation in action. It challenges 20 university teams, through a series of 10 contests, to demonstrate inventive clean-energy solutions by building solar-powered houses that feature cost-effective, energy-efficient construction and incorporate energy-saving appliances and renewable energy systems. Victoria University of Wellington's team was the first group, ever, to compete from the Southern Hemisphere.
Their entry, the FirstLight house channels the essence of the iconic “Kiwi bach” – a focus on recreation, socialising, and outdoor living. As primarily a summer destination, life at the bach takes place as much outside, on large decks and patios, as it does inside. The house brings these ideals of bach life into a contemporary setting, providing a permanent residence where recreation and social activities are united with environmentally sound technologies.
