Building an Icon: Creating the Waitomo Glowworm Caves Visitor Centre
Waitomo Glowworm Caves Visitor Centre, New Zealand - Concept, Design, Writing, Construction
Eklektus Inc. engaged with Tourism Holdings Ltd. (thl) to construct and fill the exhibition space of the Waitomo Glowworm Caves' award-winning new visitor centre. The theme of the exhibition is the building's iconic architecture, created by the Architecture Workshop. (Photo: thl).
The building provides an indoor/outdoor exhbition space, into which the Eklektus Inc. team installed exhibition 'cubes', deisgned by Kai Hawkins, which housed much of the content, providing an immersive and intimate visitor experience.

Visitors enter the exhbition from the restaurant below, creating a dramatic first impression.

A timeline wall tells the story of the construction, written by Morgan Davie and designed by George Hajian (The Alchemist) from the building's groundbreaking to the full opening that signalled its completion.

The main gallery gives information about the building's engineering, leading on to covering the natural environment and traditional Maori technology that inspired much of the building's form.

The exhibition also includes a Kids' Space, where children can explore their inner architect by using blocks provided to create buildings of their own.
